How to Wear Rudraksha — Rituals, Days & Care
Wearing rudraksha properly is the difference between an inert bead and a daily spiritual anchor. This guide covers the first-time energisation ritual, the right day of the week for your mukhi count, the correct wrist or neck placement, daily care, restringing intervals, and what to do if you drop it. All recommendations are vetted by DivineTatva's consulting Vedic astrologers and align with both Shaiva and Vaishnava traditions.
First-time energisation ritual
A new rudraksha needs energisation (pran pratishtha) before first wear. This is a one-time ritual that connects the bead to your specific energetic intention. It takes 15-20 minutes; do it on the right day for your mukhi count.
- 01Pick the right day
Universal: Monday (Somwar) works for all mukhis. Mukhi-specific: 1 mukhi → Sunday; 5 mukhi → Thursday; 7 mukhi → Saturday; 11 mukhi → Tuesday. Avoid amavasya (new moon) and rahu kal.
- 02Bathe and dress simply
Bathe before sunrise if possible. Wear clean white, yellow, or light-coloured clothes. Sit facing east (rising sun) on a clean mat.
- 03Set up a small altar
Light a ghee diya (clarified butter lamp), sandalwood incense, and place a small bowl of water or raw cow milk. A picture of Lord Shiva is traditional but not required.
- 04Cleanse the rudraksha
Dip the bead briefly in raw cow milk (or clean water with a drop of Ganga jal). Pat dry gently with a clean cotton cloth. Place on a copper, brass, or silver plate.
- 05Recite the mantra 108 times
Universal: Om Namah Shivaya. Mukhi-specific bija mantras listed in the FAQs below. Hold the rudraksha in your right hand, eyes closed. Use your other hand to count on a separate counting mala or fingers (one knuckle joint per recitation).
- 06Touch to forehead, then wear
After 108 recitations, touch the rudraksha to the centre of your forehead (ajna chakra / third eye), then to your heart. Wear immediately on the right wrist or around the neck.
Which day to wear — mukhi-specific guide
Each mukhi (face count) corresponds to a planet, and each planet has a ruling day of the week. Wearing on the right day maximises the bead's effect during the first 40-day mandala period.
| 1 mukhi | Sunday — ruled by Sun (Surya) |
| 2 mukhi | Monday — ruled by Moon (Chandra) |
| 3 mukhi | Tuesday — ruled by Mars (Mangal) |
| 4 mukhi | Wednesday — ruled by Mercury (Budh) |
| 5 mukhi | Thursday — ruled by Jupiter (Guru) — most common |
| 6 mukhi | Friday — ruled by Venus (Shukra) |
| 7 mukhi | Saturday — ruled by Saturn (Shani) |
| 8 mukhi | Wednesday — ruled by Mercury / Ganesha |
| 9 mukhi | Tuesday — ruled by Mars / Goddess Durga |
| 10 mukhi | Wednesday — ruled by Lord Vishnu |
| 11 mukhi | Tuesday — ruled by Hanuman / Rudra |
| 12 mukhi | Sunday — ruled by Sun (alternate) |
| 13 mukhi | Tuesday — ruled by Mars / Kama Dev |
| 14 mukhi | Saturday — ruled by Saturn / Hanuman |
| If unsure of mukhi | Monday — universal safe choice |
Wrist, neck, or pendant?
Three placement options, each with different traditional rationale:
- Right wrist (most common) — yang / projecting side. Best for active spiritual practice and visible reminder during the workday. Use a single rudraksha or a wrist mala (18-22 beads).
- Around the neck — keeps the bead near the heart chakra (anahata) and throat chakra (vishuddha). Standard for full malas (108 beads). Preferred for meditation practitioners.
- As a pendant on a silver chain — elegant for daily wear, especially if you can't wear a mala visibly at work. Silver enhances energetic conductivity.
What to avoid: left wrist (this is the receiving side, reserved for wealth crystals like pyrite, citrine), gold chain plated over base metal (use real silver or sterling), nylon thread (frays unpredictably).
Daily care + restringing
Daily / weekly
- Remove before bath if using soap or shampoo
- Remove before swimming, sauna, or heavy chemical exposure
- Quick rinse with plain water after sweaty workouts is OK
- Avoid touching the bead with perfume / cologne hands
Monthly
- Smudge with sandalwood smoke for 30 seconds
- Recite Om Namah Shivaya 21 times while holding
- Inspect thread / chain for fraying or kinks
Every 6-12 months
- Major cleanse with raw cow milk (or Ganga jal), pat dry
- Light oil with 1 drop of pure sesame oil rubbed in with cotton cloth — restores depth of colour, prevents drying / cracking
- Restring on fresh red cotton or silk thread if frayed
- Re-energise with mantra (108 recitations) after restringing

Which day is best to wear rudraksha for the first time?
Monday (Somwar) is universally auspicious for all rudraksha because the moon (Som) is calming and supportive of new spiritual undertakings. Mukhi-specific best days: 5 mukhi — Thursday (Jupiter); 1 mukhi — Sunday (Sun); 2 mukhi — Monday (Moon); 6 mukhi — Friday (Venus); 7 mukhi — Saturday (Saturn). Avoid amavasya (new moon) and rahu kal for first wear.
Which wrist should I wear rudraksha on?
Right wrist is traditional in Vedic practice — the right side is the giving / projecting (yang) side and rudraksha is a power conduit, not a receiving stone. Around the neck is also common, especially for malas (108 beads). Avoid the left wrist for rudraksha (left is receiving / yin, better for wealth stones like pyrite). Women wear on either wrist if doing yogic sadhana.
What is the mantra to chant when wearing rudraksha for the first time?
Universal mantra: "Om Namah Shivaya" (108 times) — works for any mukhi. Mukhi-specific bija mantras: 1 mukhi — Om Hreem Namah; 5 mukhi — Om Hreem Namah (also works for general use); 7 mukhi — Om Hum Namah; 11 mukhi — Om Hreem Hum Namah. Recite while holding the rudraksha in your right hand before wearing.
Should rudraksha be worn in silver, gold, or red thread?
Red thread (raw cotton or silk) is most traditional and energetically neutral. Silver capping is preferred when worn as a pendant for daily wear (looks elegant and silver is energetically supportive). Gold capping is reserved for sacred rituals or pooja items. Avoid plain string that frays easily — restringing every 6-12 months is expected for daily wearers.
Can I wear rudraksha 24/7 — including bath and sleep?
Bath: remove if using soap, shampoo or chemicals (they degrade the porous bead surface over months). Quick water exposure (washing hands) is fine. Sleep: optional. Many wearers keep it on for continuous protection; some prefer to remove and place near the bed. Always remove before swimming in chlorinated pools or saltwater.
Are there foods I should avoid while wearing rudraksha?
Traditional teachings advise against alcohol, non-vegetarian food (especially beef/red meat), and onion/garlic on days when you do active rudraksha sadhana (mantra recitation, special pooja). For everyday wear, dietary restrictions are not strict — but consistent vegetarian eating is considered supportive of the bead's subtle effects.
How often should I energise / cleanse my rudraksha?
Initial energisation: once before first wear (described in the ritual section). Monthly: light cleanse — smudge with sandalwood smoke for 30 seconds and recite Om Namah Shivaya 21 times. Major cleanse (every 6-12 months): rinse with raw cow milk + Ganga jal (or clean water if Ganga jal unavailable), pat dry, oil lightly with sesame oil, re-energise with mantra. NEVER use soap or chemical cleaners.
What if I drop my rudraksha — is that bad luck?
Not bad luck. Tradition says: pick it up, touch it to your forehead, recite Om Namah Shivaya 3 times, and continue wearing. If dropped in an unclean place (toilet, dustbin), rinse with clean water, dry, re-energise on the next Monday, then wear.
Can women wear rudraksha during menstruation?
This is a custom-specific question. Strict traditional schools (especially in South India) recommend removing during menstruation as a sign of respect for the sacred object. Modern teachers (Sadhguru, others) explicitly say there is no scriptural basis for this and women may wear continuously. Choose based on your tradition and comfort. There is no spiritual harm either way.
How long until I see the effects of wearing rudraksha?
Subtle effects (calmness, better sleep, focus) within 7-21 days for most wearers. Manifestation effects (specific outcomes — career, health, relationships) typically need 90-108 days of consistent wear + daily japa with the mukhi-appropriate mantra. The mandala (40-day) period is the traditional commitment marker — if you wear and recite for 40 unbroken days, the bead is considered fully attuned to you.
