What Is a Gomti Chakra?

A Gomti Chakra is a small, naturally disc-shaped stone — technically a type of calcite or limestone formation — found in the bed of the Gomti river and along the shores near Dwarka in Gujarat. Its defining characteristic is a circular shape with a raised spiral or dot at the centre, which resembles a wheel or chakra. This natural geometry is why it holds sacred significance in Hindu tradition.

Where It Comes From

The Gomti Chakra forms in river beds through a slow geological process where calcium carbonate deposits around a central nuclei over many years, creating the distinctive disc shape. They are found primarily in two locations: the Gomti river (which flows through Lucknow and into the Ganges) and near Dwarka — the ancient city of Lord Krishna on the Gujarat coast.

Dwarka-sourced Gomti Chakras are considered especially sacred because Dwarka is one of the four dhams (sacred pilgrimage sites) and was Lord Krishna's capital city. The Gomti river near Dwarka is said to carry the blessings of both Vishnu and Krishna.

Genuine Gomti Chakras are harvested sustainably by hand from river beds. They are not mined or manufactured, which makes supply naturally limited — and counterfeit plastic versions economically attractive for unscrupulous sellers.

Connection to Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra

The Sudarshana Chakra is the divine spinning disc weapon of Lord Vishnu — the Preserver in the Hindu Trinity. In iconography, Vishnu holds the Sudarshana Chakra on his right index finger, and it is described as the destroyer of all that is negative, evil, and obstructive. It rotates at the speed of thought and cuts through adharma (unrighteousness).

The Gomti Chakra's naturally circular, disc-shaped form with a central raised point is seen as a physical, earthly manifestation of the Sudarshana Chakra. Keeping one in the home or in a wealth bag is believed to invoke Vishnu's protective energy — removing obstacles and creating a shield around what is valued.

Significance and Uses

Beyond the Kuber Potli, Gomti Chakras are used in several Hindu ritual contexts: placed at the entrance of homes to prevent negative energy from entering; kept in the puja room alongside Shaligram stones (another natural Vishnu symbol); worn as a pendant; and used in vastu correction rituals.

In Ayurveda and folk medicine, Gomti Chakra paste was historically used for certain skin applications, though this is not a modern medical practice. The stone's primary relevance today is devotional and ritual.

Why Gomti Chakra Belongs in a Kuber Potli

In the specific context of a Kuber Potli, the Gomti Chakra performs a protective function. The potli's cowrie shells, Lakshmi coin, and akshata attract and symbolise incoming wealth. The Gomti Chakra's role is to guard that wealth — to invoke Vishnu's protective disc around the bag's energy field.

Together, the attraction items (cowrie, coin, pyrite) and the protection items (Gomti chakra, red thread) create a balanced ritual ecosystem: a bag that both calls wealth in and ensures it is guarded once it arrives. This is why the Gomti Chakra is considered one of the non-negotiable items in a genuine, complete Kuber Potli — without it, an essential protective dimension is missing.

Questions

Frequently asked

Last reviewed: 17 May 2026 · Verified by the DivineTatva expert panel

Can I use a Gomti Chakra without a full Kuber Potli?

Yes. Gomti Chakras are used independently as protective objects — placed at the home entrance, in the puja room, or kept in a small pouch. They do not require the full potli context to be meaningful.

How many Gomti Chakras should be in a Kuber Potli?

One is the traditional inclusion in a Kuber Potli. Some elaborate potlis include three or seven for enhanced protection, but one genuine Gomti Chakra fulfils the ritual requirement.

Is a Gomti Chakra the same as a Shaligram?

No. A Shaligram is a fossilised ammonite found in the Gandaki river in Nepal, sacred to Vishnu in a different form. A Gomti Chakra is a calcite disc from the Gomti river, also associated with Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra. They are different objects with related but distinct significance.

Where can I buy genuine Gomti Chakras separately?

Genuine Gomti Chakras are sold at temple towns (Dwarka, Mathura, Vrindavan), reputable online stores specialising in ritual items, and direct from Jaipur-based ritual suppliers. Avoid marketplace listings with perfectly identical stones in bulk packets — those are almost certainly plastic.

Can a Gomti Chakra be washed with water?

Yes. Natural calcite can be gently rinsed with clean water. In fact, Gomti Chakras harvested from river beds are sometimes ritually bathed in Ganga jal (Ganges water) before use. Avoid harsh soaps or chemicals.
