Navagraha Candle Colours: Which Planet Uses Which Colour & Why

Navagraha candle colours follow Vedic astrology's planetary colour system, where each of the nine Grahas is assigned a hue based on its tattva (elemental quality), ruling gemstone, and traditional symbolism. Surya is red, Chandra white, Mangal dark red, Budha green, Brihaspati yellow, Shukra white-pink, Shani black, Rahu dark blue, and Ketu smoky grey.

Why Colour Matters in Navagraha Candle Ritual

Navagraha candle colours are the primary symbolic carrier of each planet's energy in Vedic ritual. Each of the nine Grahas is assigned a specific colour based on its tattva (elemental quality), ruling gemstone, and astrological tradition recorded in texts like the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Using the wrong colour — even if the mantra is correct — is considered to weaken the ritual's symbolic alignment. Colour accuracy is therefore a meaningful quality criterion when choosing a Navagraha candle set.

Planet by Planet

The Colour–Planet Connection: Each Graha Explained

Surya (Sun) — Red: Surya governs the Tejas (fire) tattva and the soul's radiance. Red is the colour of vitality, authority, and the ruby — Surya's gem. A fully saturated, warm red (not orange, not pink) is the correct specification.

Chandra (Moon) — White: Chandra governs the Jala (water) tattva and the mind's purity. White represents clarity, calm, and the pearl — Chandra's gem. An off-white or cream is acceptable; the key is absence of colour, not bright optical white.

Mangal (Mars) — Dark Red / Coral: Mangal rules blood, courage, and earth energy. Dark red or coral reflects red coral (Moonga) — Mangal's gem — and distinguishes Mars from Surya's brighter red. The shade should be noticeably deeper or more terracotta than Surya's candle.

Budha (Mercury) — Green: Budha governs the Prithvi (earth) tattva and rational intelligence. Green mirrors the emerald (Panna) and the lush, productive quality of Mercury's energy — growth through clear thinking.

Brihaspati (Jupiter) — Yellow: The Guru planet governs Akasha (ether) and expansive, spiritual wisdom. Yellow reflects the yellow sapphire (Pukhraj) and the golden light of divine knowledge. A bright, clear yellow is correct — not mustard, not gold.

Shukra (Venus) — White / Soft Pink: Shukra governs Jala (water) and the sensory pleasures of the material world. White or soft blush pink echoes diamond and opal. The colour should evoke softness and beauty — not the stark white of Chandra.

Shani (Saturn) — Black / Dark Blue: Shani governs Vayu (air) and the slow, inexorable movement of time and karma. Black and dark blue reflect blue sapphire (Neelam) — the most powerful and feared of planetary gems. The candle should be a true deep black or navy, not grey.

Rahu (North Node) — Dark Blue / Indigo: Rahu is a shadow planet with no body — it is a mathematical point of obsessive energy. Indigo-dark blue reflects hessonite (Gomed) and Rahu's deep, consuming, sometimes disorienting influence. It is slightly lighter in tone than Shani's black-blue.

Ketu (South Node) — Smoky Grey: Ketu is the moksha planet — it governs dissolution, past karma, and spiritual insight. Smoky grey reflects the intangible, otherworldly quality of cat's eye (Lahsuniya) and Ketu's detachment from material form.

Elemental System

How Tattvas Connect Colour to Planet Energy

In Vedic cosmology, all matter arises from five primary elements or Tattvas: Prithvi (earth), Jala (water), Tejas (fire), Vayu (air), and Akasha (ether/space). Each planet is associated with one or more of these Tattvas, and its colour is a visible expression of that elemental quality. Red (Tejas/fire) for Surya makes intuitive sense — the sun is fire. Green (Prithvi/earth) for Budha reflects the earthy, practical quality of Mercury's intelligence. Black (Vayu/air — specifically the cold, dense void of space) for Shani reflects Saturn's cold, slow, atmospheric quality in the outer solar system.

This system is not arbitrary colour symbolism — it is a consistent mapping that has been codified across multiple Vedic texts and is remarkably stable across regional astrological traditions in India. This is why colour accuracy in a Navagraha candle set is not merely aesthetic but ritually meaningful.

Buyer's Guide

Why Colour Accuracy Matters When Buying a Navagraha Set

The most common quality failure in cheap Navagraha candle sets is colour substitution: Surya candles come out orange instead of red, Shani candles are charcoal grey instead of true black, and Rahu and Shani candles are often indistinguishable. These deviations matter to practitioners who take the colour symbolism seriously.

Questions

Frequently asked

Last reviewed: 17 May 2026 · Verified by the DivineTatva expert panel

Why is the Surya candle red and not orange or gold?

In Vedic tradition, Surya's colour is specifically red (Rakta varna) — associated with the ruby (Manikya) and the fire tattva. Orange and gold are common in popular iconography but are not the correct ritual colour for a Navagraha candle.

Why are both Chandra and Shukra white?

Both planets are associated with the Jala (water) tattva and purity. In practice, Shukra candles are often made in soft pink or blush white to distinguish them from Chandra's pure white. The ritual instruction card will clarify which is which.

Can I use a different colour if the correct one isn't available?

Vedic tradition recommends using the correct colour for symbolic alignment. If the correct colour is unavailable, some practitioners use white as a universal substitute and rely more heavily on the mantra. However, buying a correctly coloured set is the preferred approach.

Are the colours from a Vedic text or just tradition?

The colours are documented in classical Vedic texts including the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Jaimini Sutras. They are not arbitrary — they map consistently to gem colours, elemental associations, and planetary symbolism across multiple traditions.

Is smoky grey really a Vedic colour for Ketu?

Yes. Ketu's association with dissolution, smoke, and the imperceptible is well-established in Vedic astrology. Grey-smoke mirrors Ketu's nature as an energy of fading, releasing, and transcending form.

What if my set has the wrong colours?

Mismatched colours are the most common quality issue with budget Navagraha sets. If your Surya candle looks orange or your Shani candle is grey rather than black, those deviations reduce the ritual's symbolic coherence. DivineTatva's set uses lab-certified dyes to prevent this.
