Panna Stone (Emerald): Benefits, Who Should Wear, Oiling Truth & Price

Panna stone — Mercury's gem, and the buying rules that differ.

Panna (emerald) strengthens Budh — Mercury, the graha of intellect, speech, calculation, commerce, writing, and the nervous system. It is prescribed for students, traders, accountants, writers, analysts and anyone whose livelihood runs on thinking and communicating clearly. Worn in gold on the little finger, first on a Wednesday morning. The critical buying difference from sapphire: emerald is Mohs 7.5–8 but brittle, it is expected to contain visible inclusions (the trade calls them *jardin*, French for garden), and nearly every emerald sold worldwide has been oiled to improve clarity — that is normal and disclosed, not fraud.

Panna benefits — what Mercury governs.

   Intellect, memory and analytical speed

   Mercury is buddhi-karaka — the significator of the reasoning mind. Panna is the standard prescription for students in analytical fields (mathematics, accountancy, engineering, law), and for anyone whose complaint is that they understand but cannot retain, or retain but cannot apply under pressure.

   Mercury rules vaani (speech) alongside Jupiter. Panna is prescribed for stammering and speech hesitancy in the classical texts, and in modern practice for writers, teachers, salespeople and negotiators — anyone who must be precise and persuasive at once.

   Mercury is the vanik graha, the merchant. Panna is prescribed specifically for trading, brokerage, retail, import-export and commission-based work — the businesses that turn on volume, margin and quick calculation rather than long capital cycles (which are Saturn's territory).

   Classical sources link Mercury to the nervous system, skin and speech organs, and prescribe panna for nervous exhaustion, skin conditions and stammering. This is tradition, not medicine — nervous and dermatological conditions need a physician.

   Mercury's Vimshottari mahadasha runs 17 years — the second longest. When Mercury is a functional benefic and its mahadasha or antardasha is running, panna is one of the most commonly prescribed navratna in Indian practice.

Who should wear panna — the lagna table.

One placement note specific to Mercury: it is debilitated in Meen (Pisces) and exalted in Kanya (Virgo). A Meen-lagna native with Mercury in Meen has a doubly weak Mercury and is a case where an astrologer may still prescribe panna despite the lagna table — this is exactly the kind of judgement that needs a chart reading rather than a lookup.

How to wear panna — and how to not break it.

   Weight: 3–6 carats for adults

   Roughly one ratti per 12 kg body weight, as with the other navratna. Emerald is less dense than corundum, so a 5ct emerald looks noticeably larger than a 5ct sapphire — budget for the visual size you want, not the carat number alone.

   Metal: gold, little finger, right hand

   Kanishthika (little finger) is Mercury's finger. Gold is the classical setting; silver is accepted in some schools. Open-back setting so the stone contacts skin.

   Day: Wednesday morning, Shukla Paksha

   Budhvar is Mercury's day. Purify overnight in raw milk or Gangajal, offer green leaves (durva grass traditionally), light a diya, and recite Om Bram Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah 108 times.

   Handle it like the brittle stone it is

   This is where most emeralds are ruined. Despite Mohs 7.5–8, emerald has poor toughness — the same inclusions that make it natural also make it prone to chipping and cleaving on impact. Remove it before gym, cooking, gardening and any manual work. A knock that a sapphire shrugs off will chip an emerald.

   NEVER ultrasonic-clean or steam an emerald

   The single most important care rule for panna. Ultrasonic cleaners and steamers drive the clarity-enhancement oil out of the fissures, and the stone turns visibly cloudy — permanently, unless re-oiled by a professional. Clean only with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Many jewellers have destroyed customers' emeralds this way.

Why every emerald is oiled — and when it becomes a problem.

Emerald forms with surface-reaching fissures as a near-universal feature of how the crystal grows. For centuries the trade has filled these fissures with cedarwood oil (and in modern practice with resins) because the oil's refractive index is close to emerald's, so the fissures become far less visible. This is disclosed, accepted, and applied to an estimated 95%+ of emeralds sold worldwide, including in the finest jewellery houses. **Oiling is not fraud. Undisclosed heavy resin filling sold as 'no oil' is.**

Lab reports grade the degree of clarity enhancement, and this is the number that actually moves the price. Read it before you read anything else on the report.

For astrological purposes our panel's position mirrors the pukhraj heating question: the classical texts specify freedom from cracks, black spots and dullness, and say nothing about oiling because it long predates the texts' concern. A **minor**-oiled clean stone is a better astrological and financial buy than a significantly-filled stone at any price. Ask for the enhancement grade in writing before payment.

Zambian vs Colombian vs Brazilian panna.

For astrological wear, origin matters far less than colour saturation, absence of the classical doshas, and enhancement grade. A well-saturated clean Zambian at ₹8,000/ct is a better astrological stone than a pale, heavily-filled 'Colombian' at ₹20,000/ct — and the Colombian claim is frequently unverified anyway. Buy the stone in front of you, not the country on the tag.

Real vs fake panna — including the counter-intuitive test.

   Flawless = suspicious (the counter-intuitive rule)

   Unlike every other gemstone, a completely clean emerald under 10× magnification is a red flag, not a virtue. Natural emerald almost always shows jardin — three-phase inclusions, fissures, mineral crystals. A perfectly clear green stone at a low price is glass, synthetic beryl or green quartz. Learn to want the garden.

   RI 1.577–1.583, SG 2.67–2.78

   On the lab report. Green quartz (prasiolite) reads RI 1.544, SG 2.65. Green glass reads a single RI around 1.50–1.70 with no birefringence. Synthetic hydrothermal emerald reads the same as natural — which is why inclusions and the lab's own synthetic-detection matter.

   Chelsea filter (trade tool)

   Natural chromium-coloured emerald typically appears red or pink through a Chelsea colour filter; most green glass and green quartz stay green. It is a screening tool, not proof — some Zambian emeralds (vanadium-rich) also stay green — but any seller serious about emerald owns one, and refusing to show you the filter result is informative.

   Honest substitutes (upratna)

   Classical Mercury substitutes are **peridot (zabarjad)**, **green tourmaline**, **green onyx** and **jade**. Peridot at ₹400–₹2,000/ct is the most commonly prescribed. These are legitimate when sold as substitutes; the fraud is a peridot certificate reading 'panna'.

   Verify the certificate

   GIA, IGI, GRS, GTL Jaipur — check the report number on the lab's site. For emerald specifically, confirm the report states both the species (natural beryl) AND the clarity-enhancement degree. A report that omits the enhancement grade is incomplete for emerald.
