About this piece
Emerald, known in Sanskrit as Panna or Budh Ratna, is the green gem variety of beryl (Be3Al2Si6O18) coloured by trace chromium and vanadium, with Mohs hardness 7.5-8 and refractive index 1.577-1.583. This 3.25 ct stone is sourced from the Kagem mine of Zambia's Kafubu emerald belt — currently the world's leading source of high-clarity vivid green emeralds. Ruled by Budh (Mercury), it is the primary stone for Mithun (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo) rashis. The stone is GRS-certified as Zambian-origin with minor (insignificant) clarity enhancement using cedar oil — the only treatment permitted by classical Vedic texts and modern gemological standards. Cut as a classic emerald-cut step octagon to showcase its natural colour while protecting the brittle corners.

Frequently asked
Why does emerald require oil treatment and does it affect astrological efficacy?
Emerald crystals contain inherent jardin (garden) inclusions due to their geological formation. Cedar oil filling of surface-reaching fissures is a 2000-year-old practice accepted by all major gem labs (GIA, GRS, SSEF) when graded "none to minor" and disclosed. Per Brihat Samhita and modern Jyotisha consensus, minor oil treatment does not diminish Panna's planetary efficacy as it does not alter the mineral lattice. Only "moderate to significant" oil or polymer (resin) treatment is astrologically discouraged. Our stone shows only insignificant oil, GRS-graded.
What is the difference between Zambian, Colombian and Indian (Rajasthan) emerald?
Colombian (Muzo-Chivor-Coscuez) emerald is the historical gold standard — slightly bluish-green, lower iron, premium ₹40,000-3 lakh per carat. Zambian emerald shows vivid green with slightly higher iron content giving better hardness and clarity, ₹8,000-40,000 per carat. Indian Rajasthan (Bubani-Kaliguman) emerald is lower clarity, heavily included, ₹2,000-8,000 per carat. Astrologically all three sources are equally effective per Vedic texts — Zambian offers the best clarity-to-price ratio for new buyers.
When should I avoid wearing Emerald?
Avoid if Mercury is a functional malefic in your chart (e.g., for Mesh, Vrishchik or Dhanu lagnas where Budh rules maraka or dussthana houses), if you have severe vata-pitta imbalance with chronic skin rashes, or if you experience speech difficulties or memory disturbance within 21 days of wear. Children below age 7 should use the substitute Peridot. Discontinue during periods of Budh-Aditya yoga if it is afflicted by Rahu.
What is the substitute stone if Panna is out of budget?
The recognised upratna substitutes for Emerald are Peridot (Zabarjad), Green Tourmaline and Green Onyx. Peridot at 5-7 ct delivers approximately 60 per cent of Panna's Budh effect at one-fifteenth the cost — particularly suitable for children and budget-conscious students. Green Tourmaline at 4-6 ct gives around 50 per cent benefit with better hardness. All must be lab-certified natural, set in gold or silver, and energised on Wednesday. Peridot starter pieces from ₹2,200.
How should I care for an oiled emerald in daily wear?
Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners (these remove the oil), hot water above 50 degree-C, and chemical cleansers including perfume sprays at the hand. Clean only with lukewarm water and mild soap using a soft brush, then pat dry. Re-oiling with cedar or palm oil every 3-5 years restores any lost fill — we offer this complimentary annually for stones purchased from DivineTatva. Store separately from harder stones (sapphire, diamond) to prevent scratching of the softer beryl surface. ---
