About this piece
Saraswati (Sanskrit: Sarasvatī, "flowing one") is the goddess of vidya (knowledge), vak (speech), kala (arts), and sangeet (music). Consort of Brahma in the Smarta trinity, she is depicted seated on a white padma with a hamsa (swan) vahana, holding four attributes: a veena (lute, lower hands), a pustaka (book) symbolising the Vedas, and a mala (rosary) symbolising contemplative practice. Her four arms represent manas (mind), buddhi (intellect), chitta (memory), and ahamkara (ego). Cast in solid brass (~85% Cu / 15% Zn) with fine engraving on the veena strings, padma petals, and her flowing vastra. References: Rig Veda 6.61 (Sarasvatī-Sukta), Devi Bhagavata Purana 9.1. Peak demand: Vasant Panchami (her appearance day), exam seasons (Feb–May, Sep–Nov), and student-household altars. Vastu: East or North; ideally above eye level on a study desk or in the puja room.

How to wear
Place on a white cloth-covered chowki facing East, ideally near the study area or in the puja room. Offer white flowers (jasmine, white lotus), akshata, gandha (sandal), kheer or white sweets, and a ghee diya. On Vasant Panchami, dress the idol in yellow cloth and offer yellow flowers and yellow rice. Place school books, musical instruments, or art tools before her for Saraswati Vandana before exams or performances. Chant Om Aim Saraswatyei Namah (108 times) daily, or the Saraswati Vandana (Yaa Kundendu Tushaara Haara Dhavalaa...). Wednesdays and Thursdays are particularly auspicious.
Frequently asked
Should the idol be placed on the study desk or in the puja room?
Both are acceptable. Tradition places her in the puja room for daily upasana; modern households often have a smaller secondary idol or photo on the study desk. The puja-room idol should be the primary vigraha.
Is yellow always associated with Saraswati?
Yellow is associated specifically with Vasant Panchami (spring) when she is worshipped in yellow cloth. Her general iconographic colour is white (purity, knowledge). Both are correct in their contexts.
Can Saraswati be worshipped alongside Lakshmi at home?
Yes. While popular folk belief sometimes claims they don't co-reside, Shastric tradition fully supports household worship of all three goddesses (Saraswati, Lakshmi, Durga) together — they are Tridevi, complementary aspects of Shakti.
Cleaning method?
Soft dry cloth daily. Weekly: lemon-salt paste, rinse and dry. The fine veena engraving should be cleaned with a soft brush, not scrubbed.
If the idol breaks?
Immerse respectfully in flowing water with a brief Saraswati Vandana recitation. Replace with a freshly consecrated idol.
Can non-Hindus install Saraswati for study purposes?
Yes. Saraswati is widely worshipped across Buddhist (as Benzaiten in Japan, Yangchenma in Tibet) and Jain traditions. Ownership and devotional study are open to all. ---
