Why wear it
  • Protection from premature death — Tryambaka mantra is the classical Vedic remedy cited in the Rigveda for averting akala-mrityu (untimely death)
  • Accelerated healing — Shiva-Shakti shatkona balances ida and pingala nadis; supports recovery from surgery, accident, and chronic illness
  • Mental peace and freedom from fear — Daily mantra dissolves the anxiety of mortality and stabilises the nervous system
  • Longevity (ayushya) and vitality (pushti) — The mantra literally invokes "sugandhim pushtivardhanam" — the fragrant nourisher who strengthens life-force
  • Protection during travel and surgery — Traditionally worn or installed before long journeys, operations, or any high-risk activity
The Detail

About this piece

The Maha Mrityunjaya Yantra (Sanskrit: "great conqueror of death") is the geometric form of Lord Shiva as Tryambaka, the three-eyed healer and slayer of premature death. Its core geometry is the shatkona — a six-pointed star formed by one upward triangle (Shiva, fire, the masculine ascending principle) interlocked with one downward triangle (Shakti, water, the descending feminine principle) — surrounded by an eight-petal lotus, an outer circle representing wholeness, and a four-gate bhupura. The shatkona symbolises perfect Shiva-Shakti balance, the equilibrium of prana and apana that the Mrityunjaya tradition identifies as the condition for radiant health and a long, complete life. Engraved on copper for its solar-conductive properties and recommended for the chronically ill, the accident-prone, anyone in surgery recovery, and those whose horoscope shows life-shortening planetary affliction. Hand-engraved in Jaipur and energised on a Monday (Shiva's day) or Mahashivratri.

How to wear

Place the yantra in the north or east of the pooja room or sickroom at eye level, on a clean white cloth. Light a ghee lamp morning and evening. Offer bilva (bel) leaves, white flowers, and a few drops of milk or water. Chant the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra "Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat" 108 times daily — ideally facing east at sunrise. Monday is the most powerful day. For acute health crisis, recite 1,008 times for 11, 21, or 40 consecutive days.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I tell hand-engraved from machine-stamped?

The shatkona vertices are the critical test — in a hand-engraved yantra, each of the six points of the star is sharp and crisply cut; machine versions blur the vertex into a rounded blob. The 8-petal lotus should also show individual vein lines hand-cut into each petal.

Can I place the Mrityunjaya Yantra in the bedroom?

Yes — this is one of the few yantras explicitly recommended for the bedroom of the elderly, ill, or anxious. Place on the east wall above eye level. Cover with a clean cloth if the bedroom is also used for intimacy.

How often should I worship?

Daily 11 repetitions of the mantra with a lamp is the minimum; 108 is the standard. During illness or planetary affliction, intensify to 1,008 daily for 40 days.

Can women worship during periods?

Yes — Shiva is the most accessible of all deities and tradition allows mental mantra repetition even during menses. Physical touching is paused for three days.

Where do I dispose of an old yantra?

Immerse in flowing water (Ganga, river, or sea) with three repetitions of the Mrityunjaya mantra. Never discard with household waste.

Can I use a printed paper version?

A printed yantra is acceptable as a temporary aid (e.g. taped near a hospital bed), but copper is the substrate prescribed in the Rudrayamala for sustained healing energy. ---
