About this piece
Pearl, known in Sanskrit as Moti or Chandra Ratna, is an organic biogenic gem composed of concentric layers of aragonite (CaCO3) and conchiolin protein, formed within the mantle tissue of bivalve molluscs. With Mohs hardness 2.5-4.5 and an iridescent nacreous lustre, this 6.50 ct (1.30 g) pearl is a saltwater cultured South Sea pearl from Pinctada maxima oysters farmed in the warm waters off Western Australia. Ruled by Chandra (Moon), it is the primary stone for Karka (Cancer) rashi and is universally beneficial for emotional stabilisation. The pearl is GTL-Jaipur certified as natural cultured (not imitation or freshwater Chinese), showing untreated body colour and silver-pink orient. Drilled half-way and set as a ring or pendant in 925 silver per Vedic prescription.

Frequently asked
What is the difference between South Sea, Akoya, Tahitian and freshwater pearls?
South Sea (Pinctada maxima) pearls are the largest and most lustrous saltwater pearls, 8-20mm, silver-white to gold, ₹8,000-2 lakh per pearl. Akoya (Pinctada fucata) are smaller saltwater Japanese pearls, 5-9mm, sharp mirror lustre. Tahitian (Pinctada margaritifera) are dark saltwater pearls, 8-15mm. Freshwater (Hyriopsis cumingii) are Chinese mussel pearls, often dyed, ₹100-2,000 per pearl, astrologically considered inferior. Vedic astrology prescribes saltwater natural pearls only — our South Sea piece is the optimal balance of size, lustre and accessibility.
When should I avoid wearing Pearl?
Avoid if Moon is severely afflicted by Rahu (Grahan dosha) or combust with Sun within 12 degrees, if you have severe kapha-induced congestion, oedema, or unexplained weight gain, or during Chandra-Mangal yoga if it is malefic in your chart. Discontinue if you experience emotional hyper-sensitivity, excessive tearfulness, or sleep disturbance worsening within 14 days. Persons with hypothyroidism should consult before wearing as Moon governs fluid metabolism.
What is the substitute stone if South Sea Pearl is out of budget?
The recognised upratna substitutes for Pearl are Moonstone (Chandrakanta Mani) and Cultured Akoya Pearl. Moonstone at 5-7 ct delivers approximately 70 per cent of Moti's Chandra effect at one-fifth the cost and is significantly more durable (Mohs 6 vs pearl 2.5-4.5). Akoya at 4-6 ct provides around 85 per cent of South Sea efficacy at half the price but is smaller. Both must be lab-certified natural and set in silver. Moonstone starter rings from ₹1,500.
How do I care for a pearl in daily wear to prevent damage?
Pearls are organic and chemically delicate. Apply perfume, makeup, hairspray and lotions before putting on the pearl — the "last on, first off" rule. Wipe with a soft damp cloth after each wear to remove skin oils and salt. Store separately in a soft cloth pouch (not airtight container — pearls need humidity). Restring annually if used as a strand. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, chlorinated water and ultrasonic cleaners. With proper care a pearl maintains lustre for 50-100 years.
How does ratti weight differ from carat for pearl prescription?
One ratti equals approximately 0.91 carat. Vedic astrologers prescribe Moti minimum weight as one-tenth of body weight in kg expressed in ratti — typically 5-9 ratti (4.5-8.2 ct) for adult wear. This 6.50 ct pearl equals 7.52 ratti, suitable for body weights up to 75 kg. Pearls are commonly weighed in chow (1 chow = 0.20 g = 1 ct) in the trade — our 6.50 ct piece is 6.50 chow. Strands for mala use require minimum 27-54 pearls of uniform size. ---
