The Detail

About this piece

Ruby, known in Sanskrit as Manik or Surya Ratna, is the red gem variety of corundum (Al2O3) coloured by trace chromium, with Mohs hardness 9 and refractive index 1.762-1.770. This 3.10 ct stone originates from the Mogok Stone Tract of Upper Burma (Myanmar) — the classical source of "pigeon blood" rubies referenced in Ratnapariksha and prescribed in Brihat Samhita as the supreme Manik. Ruled by Surya (Sun), it is the primary stone for Simha (Leo) rashi and is universally beneficial during Surya Mahadasha. The stone is GRS-certified as Mogok-origin with "no heat" treatment status, displaying the signature slightly-purplish vivid red hue caused by chromium fluorescence. Cut as an oval mixed-brilliant, it shows full face-up colour saturation with no extinction zones.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I distinguish Burmese pigeon-blood ruby from glass-filled or heated stones?

Authentic Mogok ruby shows strong red fluorescence under longwave UV (365nm), natural silk-like rutile inclusions visible at 10x magnification, and a distinctive slightly-purplish-red hue rather than the orange-red of heated material. Glass-filled rubies show flash effects and gas bubbles under microscopy. We provide a GRS report stating origin and treatment, and you may submit the stone to any independent lab for verification within 7 days. The GRS report references match our stone serial laser-inscribed on the girdle.

When should I avoid wearing Ruby?

Avoid if your horoscope shows Sun as a maraka or badhaka lord (e.g., for Vrishabha lagna as 4th lord with 7th aspect), if you have severe pitta-dominant constitution with hypertension, or during periods of intense Surya-Mangal yoga without astrologer guidance. Discontinue if you experience persistent headaches, irritability, skin eruptions, or unusual aggression within 21 days of wear. Pregnant women should consult an astrologer specialising in stri-jataka before wearing Manik.

What is the substitute stone if Burmese ruby is out of budget?

The recognised upratna substitutes for Ruby are Red Garnet (Rakt Manik), Red Spinel (Lal), and Rubellite Tourmaline. Red Garnet at 5-7 ct delivers approximately 50 per cent of Manik's Surya effect at one-fifteenth the price. Red Spinel, historically confused with ruby until 1783, delivers around 70 per cent benefit and is sometimes preferred by astrologers for those with sensitive constitution. Both must be lab-certified natural and set in gold or copper. Garnet starter stones from ₹2,400.

What is the difference between Burmese, Mozambique and Thai ruby?

Burmese (Mogok) ruby is the classical source — silky pigeon-blood red with strong fluorescence, ₹40,000-3 lakh per carat for unheated material. Mozambique (Niassa) ruby emerged commercially in 2009 — slightly less fluorescent but excellent colour, ₹15,000-60,000 per carat. Thai (Chanthaburi) ruby is darker, less fluorescent due to higher iron, and primarily heat-treated, ₹3,000-15,000 per carat. Vedic astrology specifically prescribes high-fluorescence Burmese material; we offer Mozambique as a mid-tier alternative.

How does ratti weight differ from carat for ruby prescription?

One ratti equals approximately 0.91 carat. Vedic astrologers prescribe Manik minimum weight as one-twelfth of body weight in kg expressed in ratti — typically 3-5 ratti (2.7-4.5 ct) for adult wear. This 3.10 ct piece equals 3.58 ratti, suitable for body weights up to 43 kg or for moderate remedial intent. For stronger remedy or heavier individuals we offer 4-6 ct pieces. Anything below 2 ratti is considered ornamental rather than astrologically effective. ---
