The Detail

About this piece

Red Coral, known in Sanskrit as Moonga or Mangal Ratna, is an organic biogenic gem composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) secreted by colonial marine polyps of the Corallium genus, with Mohs hardness 3.5-4. This 5.75 ct stone is harvested from the Mediterranean off the Sardinian and Sicilian coasts of Italy — the classical "Italian Moonga" source prescribed in Garuda Purana as supreme for planetary remedy. Ruled by Mangal (Mars), it is the primary stone for Mesh (Aries) and Vrishchik (Scorpio) rashis. The coral is GTL-Jaipur certified as natural untreated Corallium rubrum, displaying its characteristic salmon-to-deep-red colour and natural matte-to-waxy lustre. Cut in the traditional Vedic triangular cabochon (trikoni) shape — astrologically the most efficacious form for Mangal energy.

Soak in unboiled cow milk for 10 minutes, place before Mangal yantra with red flowers, chant "Om Kram Krim Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah" 108 times facing south. Re-energise on Mangal-Hora annually.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I distinguish natural Italian coral from dyed bone, plastic or reconstructed coral?

Authentic Italian Corallium rubrum shows natural growth striations and tiny round Haversian-like canals visible at 10x magnification, a matte-to-waxy (not glassy) lustre, and a characteristic "knock-knock" dull sound when tapped (plastic rings high-pitched). It does not fade in lemon juice (dyed bone fades). Reconstructed coral shows uniform colour without natural striations. We provide GTL-Jaipur natural coral certification, and the stone may be re-tested independently within 7 days.

Why is the triangular shape (trikoni) prescribed for Moonga?

The trikoni cabochon is prescribed in Garuda Purana and Mansagari as the astrologically most efficacious form for Mangal because the three-sided geometry corresponds to the trikona houses (1st, 5th, 9th) ruled energetically by Mars-related dharma karakas. The pointed apex when worn upward channels Mars energy into the body via the marma points of the finger. Oval and capsule cabochons work but at approximately 80 per cent efficacy. Round and faceted cuts are not traditionally prescribed for Moonga.

When should I avoid wearing Red Coral?

Avoid if Mars is a functional malefic in your chart (e.g., for Tula, Vrishabha or Kanya lagnas where Kuja rules maraka houses), if you have severe pitta-rakta dominance with hypertension or skin inflammation, or if you experience persistent anger, accidents, or surgical complications within 21 days. Pregnant women should consult before wearing — Mars governs raktadhatu and uterine contractions. Discontinue during severe Kuja-Shani square if it is functional malefic.

What is the substitute stone if Italian coral is out of budget?

The recognised upratna substitutes for Red Coral are Carnelian (Akik Lal), Red Jasper and Bloodstone. Carnelian at 6-8 ct delivers approximately 50 per cent of Moonga's Mangal effect at one-tenth the cost and is significantly more durable (Mohs 7 vs coral 3.5-4). Red Jasper at 8-10 ct gives around 40 per cent benefit. Both must be lab-certified natural and set in copper or gold. Carnelian starter rings from ₹950.

How does ratti weight differ from carat for coral prescription?

One ratti equals approximately 0.91 carat. Vedic astrologers prescribe Moonga minimum weight as one-twelfth of body weight in kg expressed in ratti — typically 5-9 ratti (4.5-8.2 ct) for adult wear, often higher (10-15 ratti) for strong Manglik remedy. This 5.75 ct stone equals 6.65 ratti, suitable for body weights up to 65 kg. Coral is often weighed in ratti directly in the trade — our piece is supplied with ratti and gram weight on certificate. ---
