About this piece
The 18-bead Karungali Wrist Mala is the most-worn daily form of authentic Diospyros ebenum (Tamil "black wood", family Ebenaceae). Eighteen beads is the classical sub-multiple of 108 (108 ÷ 6 = 18) used for short Shani japa rounds — six full circuits equal one mala. Each 8mm bead is sourced from 60–80-year-old Tamil Nadu heartwood (Salem cooperative), density-verified at GTL Jaipur at specific gravity ~1.2 (genuine ebenum sinks in water), and strung on elastic for slip-on daily wear. Ruled by Lord Shani and sacred in Hanuman bhakti, karungali offers drishti (evil-eye) protection and acts as the principal Tamil remedial wood for Sade Sati and Shani Dhaiya. Saturday Purnima energised with "Om Sham Shanaicharaya Namaha".
Specifications
How to wear
Energise on a Saturday with 108 recitations of "Om Sham Shanaicharaya Namaha". Slip onto the right wrist (men) or left (women). For japa, advance one bead per recitation and complete six circuits = 108. Avoid soap, perfume, oil and chlorinated water. Wipe with dry cotton after sweat exposure.
Frequently asked
Why 18 beads specifically?
18 is a perfect sub-divisor of 108 (108 ÷ 6 = 18). Six wrist-circuits equal one japa mala — convenient for office or travel sadhana where a full 108 mala is impractical.
How do I test the wood?
Cut the elastic on one spare bead (we include one), drop it in water — Diospyros ebenum sinks (SG ~1.2). Scratch test: black throughout, not surface dye.
Will the elastic break?
We use 1.0mm Korean stretch cord rated for 2+ years of daily wear. Free re-stringing within the first year.
Can children wear it?
Yes — karungali is traditionally given to Tamil children for drishti protection. Use the smaller sizing option at checkout (60mm inner diameter).
Menstruation rules?
Same as full malas — rest for the cycle, resume on day 5 after bath. ---
