Karungali Wrist Mala — 18-Bead Daily Wear

The 18-bead Karungali Wrist Mala is the most-worn daily form of authentic Diospyros ebenum (Tamil "black wood", family Ebenaceae). Eighteen beads is the classical sub-multiple of 108 (108 ÷ 6 = 18) used for short Shani japa rounds — six full circuits equal one mala. Each 8mm bead is sourced from 60–80-year-old Tamil Nadu heartwood (Salem cooperative), density-verified at GTL Jaipur at specific gravity ~1.2 (genuine ebenum sinks in water), and strung on elastic for slip-on daily wear. Ruled by Lord Shani and sacred in Hanuman bhakti, karungali offers drishti (evil-eye) protection and acts as the principal Tamil remedial wood for Sade Sati and Shani Dhaiya. Saturday Purnima energised with "Om Sham Shanaicharaya Namaha".

How to wear

Energise on a Saturday with 108 recitations of "Om Sham Shanaicharaya Namaha". Slip onto the right wrist (men) or left (women). For japa, advance one bead per recitation and complete six circuits = 108. Avoid soap, perfume, oil and chlorinated water. Wipe with dry cotton after sweat exposure.

Karungali's authentication is unusually clean because the heartwood's density is exceptional: SG around 1.2, which makes it one of the few woods that sinks.

   Sink test

   Genuine karungali heartwood sinks in water. Dyed lighter woods — the standard substitute — float. This is the primary field test and it is decisive.

   Dye check

   Rub a bead with a damp white cloth. Dyed wood transfers black colour; genuine karungali does not, because the black is the wood itself.

   Grain

   Under a 10× loupe, real ebony shows a fine natural grain. Painted or dyed substitutes show colour sitting on top of a visibly different underlying wood.

   Weight and feel

   Karungali is noticeably heavy and hard for wood, with a smooth almost-stone feel when polished.

Care note — Dry care only. Wipe with a dry cloth; oil sparingly with sesame oil a few times a year. Prolonged water exposure damages it.
