About this piece
Karungali is the Tamil name for Diospyros ebenum (family Ebenaceae) — Indian Ebony, a slow-growing heartwood tree that matures over 60–80 years across Tamil Nadu (Salem, Madurai), Karnataka and Sri Lanka. The jet-black heartwood is exceptionally dense, with a specific gravity of approximately 1.2, meaning authentic karungali sinks in water — the primary field authentication test. Ruled by Lord Shani (Saturn) and revered in Hanuman bhakti, karungali is the principal Tamil remedial wood for Sade Sati, Shani Dhaiya and drishti (evil-eye) protection. This 6mm 108-bead mala is DivineTatva's accessible entry into authentic Diospyros ebenum japa — knotted on cotton thread, density-verified at GTL Jaipur, and energised on Saturday Purnima with "Om Sham Shanaicharaya Namaha".

How to wear
Energise on a Saturday by reciting "Om Sham Shanaicharaya Namaha" 108 times. Wear around the neck or right wrist (men) / left (women). Hold beads between right thumb and middle finger during japa — never the index finger. Keep away from perfume, soap, oil and chlorinated water. Wipe with a dry cotton cloth after use; store in the included pouch facing the puja altar.
Frequently asked
How do I water-test authenticity?
Drop a single bead into a glass of plain water at room temperature. Genuine Diospyros ebenum has specific gravity ~1.2 and sinks immediately. Fake dyed softwood (rosewood, painted sheesham) floats or sinks slowly. Our GTL Jaipur certificate confirms density before despatch.
Will the black colour scratch off?
No. Karungali is jet-black throughout the heartwood — not surface-dyed. Scratch a bead lightly with a pin on an inner surface; authentic ebony shows the same black underneath. Dyed wood reveals pale cream/yellow under the dye.
Can women wear it during menstruation?
Traditional Tamil practice asks women to set the mala aside during the menstrual cycle and resume after a bath on day 5. The bead is not "impure" — this is rest etiquette, not prohibition.
What is a 40-day mandala?
Wearing or chanting on the same mala for 40 consecutive days establishes a mandala — the bead absorbs the practitioner's sankalpa vibration. Shani sadhana mandalas traditionally start on a Saturday.
Can I pair it with a rudraksha mala?
Yes — Shani (karungali) + Shiva (rudraksha) is a classical pairing. Wear karungali on the right and rudraksha on the left, or layer with rudraksha closer to the heart. ---
