Why wear it
  • Neutralises malefic effects of Rahu during its 18-year Mahadasha and shadow transit periods — traditional Vedic recommendation for Rahu sade-sati and Rahu-Ketu axis afflictions
  • Removes confusion, deceptive influences, addiction patterns and sudden unexpected losses (Rahu karakatva)
  • Auspicious for those in unconventional careers — film, photography, foreign trade, technology, occult sciences, aviation
  • Protects against snake-bite phobia, evil eye, hidden enemies and conspiracy threats (classical Rahu domains)
  • Stabilises Rahu-induced mental disturbance, paranoia and unfulfilled desires per Lal Kitab remediation
The Detail

About this piece

Hessonite, known in Sanskrit as Gomed or Rahu Ratna, is the honey-to-cinnamon-coloured calcium aluminium silicate variety of grossular garnet (Ca3Al2Si3O12), with Mohs hardness 7-7.5 and refractive index 1.738-1.745. This 6.25 ct stone is sourced from the alluvial gem deposits of Ratnapura and Elahera, Sri Lanka — the classical Ceylon Gomed prescribed in Lal Kitab and Brihat Samhita as the supreme stone for Rahu remedy. Ruled by Rahu (north lunar node, the shadow planet), it is the primary stone for those undergoing Rahu Mahadasha (18 years) and Sade-Sati of Rahu transits. The stone is GTL-Jaipur certified as natural untreated Ceylon hessonite, displaying its characteristic "cow-urine" honey-orange body colour with treacly internal swirls (a diagnostic feature of natural grossular).

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I distinguish natural Hessonite from synthetic or substitute stones?

Natural Ceylon hessonite shows the diagnostic "treacle effect" — heat-haze-like swirling inclusions visible at 10x — and a refractive index of 1.738-1.745 that no synthetic replicates. Imitations are typically orange glass (RI 1.50), citrine (RI 1.54) or synthetic spinel (RI 1.71). Hessonite is also singly refractive (isotropic) under polariscope, while citrine substitute is doubly refractive. We provide GTL certification stating species (grossular), variety (hessonite) and origin (Ceylon).

When should I avoid wearing Hessonite?

Avoid if Rahu is benefic in your chart (e.g., for those with Rahu yogakaraka placement in 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th from lagna giving wealth and unconventional success), if you are pregnant or planning conception within 6 months, or during major life transitions like marriage or new business launch without astrologer review. Discontinue if you experience sudden financial loss, persistent strange dreams, severe anxiety, or unexplained skin disorders within 21 days.

Should Hessonite and Cat's Eye be worn together?

Per Brihat Parashara and modern Jyotisha consensus, Gomed (Rahu) and Lehsuniya (Ketu) should be worn together for full Rahu-Ketu axis remediation when both nodes are afflicted — the practice is called "Chhaya-graha sandhi upaay." However the two stones must be set in separate rings on different fingers (Gomed on middle, Lehsuniya on ring finger of right hand). Wearing only one of the pair when both nodes are afflicted may aggravate the unaddressed node. We offer a discounted Gomed+Lehsuniya pair set with combined energisation.

What is the substitute stone if Ceylon hessonite is out of budget?

The recognised upratna substitutes for Hessonite are Spessartine Garnet (Tamra Manik), Orange Zircon (Jarkan) and Honey Topaz. Spessartine at 5-7 ct delivers approximately 60 per cent of Gomed's Rahu effect at half the cost. Honey Topaz at 6-8 ct gives around 40 per cent benefit at one-quarter the cost. All must be lab-certified natural and set in silver. Spessartine starter pieces from ₹2,800.

How does ratti weight differ from carat for hessonite prescription?

One ratti equals approximately 0.91 carat. Vedic astrologers prescribe Gomed minimum weight as one-tenth of body weight in kg expressed in ratti — typically 6-12 ratti (5.5-11 ct) for adult wear, with stronger remedy requiring 10+ ratti. This 6.25 ct stone equals 7.23 ratti, suitable for body weights up to 70 kg and moderate Rahu remediation. For full Rahu Mahadasha remedy at higher body weight, we offer 9-12 ct pieces. ---
