The Detail

About this piece

Cat's Eye, known in Sanskrit as Lehsuniya, Vaidurya or Ketu Ratna, is the chatoyant variety of chrysoberyl (BeAl2O4), distinguished by a sharp white-to-silver band of light that moves across the stone as it is rotated — caused by parallel fibrous rutile inclusions. With Mohs hardness 8.5 and refractive index 1.746-1.755, it is one of the hardest and most durable Navratna stones. This 3.50 ct cabochon is sourced from Sri Lanka's chrysoberyl-bearing alluvial deposits — the classical "milk and honey" Vaidurya prescribed in Garuda Purana. Ruled by Ketu (south lunar node), it is the primary stone for Ketu Mahadasha (7 years) remediation. GRS-certified as natural chrysoberyl with strong sharp chatoyancy (not the lower-grade quartz or fibreglass imitations sold as "cat's eye").

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I distinguish chrysoberyl cat's eye from cheaper quartz or fibreglass "cat's eye"?

Authentic chrysoberyl cat's eye shows a sharp, milky-white, perfectly straight eye-band that moves smoothly across the dome under a single light source, displays the diagnostic "milk and honey" effect (one side appears milky, other golden when lit from the side), and tests at RI 1.746-1.755. Quartz cat's eye is RI 1.54-1.55 with a softer, more diffuse band. Fibreglass cat's eye shows multiple parallel bands (honeycomb effect) under magnification. We provide GRS certification specifying chrysoberyl species.

When should I avoid wearing Cat's Eye?

Avoid if Ketu is benefic in your chart (e.g., yogakaraka placement in 3rd, 6th, 9th or 12th house), if you are recently married or trying to conceive — Ketu can disturb domestic relationship karakatva, or during major spiritual transition without astrologer guidance as Ketu intensifies vairagya. Discontinue if you experience sudden losses, severe insomnia with mystical dreams, or unexplained restlessness within 21 days of wear.

Should Cat's Eye and Hessonite be worn together?

Yes, when both Rahu and Ketu are simultaneously afflicted (the nodes are always 180-degrees apart, so afflictions to one usually affect the other). Per traditional practice, Lehsuniya is worn on the ring finger of the right hand and Gomed on the middle finger of the right hand, both energised on their respective planetary days. This pairs the Chhaya-graha remediation. We offer a discounted pair-set with both stones, both certificates and combined energisation puja.

What is the substitute stone if chrysoberyl cat's eye is out of budget?

The recognised upratna substitutes for Cat's Eye are Quartz Cat's Eye (Sutramani), Apatite Cat's Eye and Tiger's Eye. Quartz Cat's Eye at 6-8 ct delivers approximately 50 per cent of Lehsuniya's Ketu effect at one-tenth the price. Tiger's Eye at 8-10 ct gives around 35 per cent benefit at one-twentieth the cost. All must be lab-certified natural with clear chatoyancy and set in silver. Quartz cat's eye starter pieces from ₹1,800.

How does ratti weight differ from carat for cat's eye prescription?

One ratti equals approximately 0.91 carat. Vedic astrologers prescribe Lehsuniya minimum weight as one-twelfth of body weight in kg expressed in ratti — typically 3-7 ratti (2.7-6.4 ct) for adult wear. This 3.50 ct stone equals 4.04 ratti, suitable for body weights up to 48 kg or moderate Ketu remediation. For full Ketu Mahadasha remedy or heavier individuals, we offer 5-7 ct pieces. Chrysoberyl is dense, so the physical stone appears smaller than equivalent-weight softer stones. ---
