The Detail

About this piece

The 27-bead Karungali Hand Mala is the quarter-mala form (108 ÷ 4 = 27) of authentic Diospyros ebenum — Tamil "karungali", the sacred jet-black heartwood ruled by Lord Shani. Each 8mm bead is sourced from licensed Tamil Nadu cooperative artisans (Salem, Madurai), turned from 60–80-year-old heartwood logs, and GTL Jaipur density-verified at specific gravity ~1.2 (genuine ebenum sinks in plain water — the field authentication test). Four hand-circuits = one 108-mala count, making this the preferred form for quick office japa, walking meditation, and pocket-carry sadhana. Saturday Purnima energised with "Om Sham Shanaicharaya Namaha". Knotted on cotton thread with a single tassel for grip during recitation. Pancha-vanam vrukshangal lineage — one of the five sacred Tamil grove trees.

How to wear

Energise on a Saturday — 108 mantras. Hold in the right hand between thumb and middle finger (never index finger — that is the ego finger). Complete four full circuits = 108. Carry in the included pouch when not in active japa. Avoid perfume, oil, soap, chlorinated water.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why 27 beads?

27 = 108 ÷ 4, and matches the 27 nakshatras. Four circuits equal one full mala — convenient for office, travel and walking japa where neck malas are impractical.

Water test on a single bead?

We include one spare loose bead — drop in water. Sinks = genuine Diospyros ebenum (SG ~1.2). Scratch test: black through-and-through.

Can it replace a 108 mala?

Functionally yes — four hand-circuits equal 108 recitations. Many practitioners keep a 27 hand mala for daytime and a 108 neck mala for morning sandhya.

Suitable for beginners?

Yes — short count is less intimidating than 108. Most practitioners build to 4 circuits over the first 40-day mandala.

Can women wear / use during menstruation?

Rest the mala for the cycle and resume on day 5 after bath — same etiquette as full malas. ---
