About this piece
Amethyst, known in Sanskrit as Jamunia or Katela, is the violet-to-purple variety of macrocrystalline quartz (SiO2) coloured by trace iron and natural gamma-radiation-induced colour centres, with Mohs hardness 7 and refractive index 1.544-1.553. This 7.50 ct stone is sourced from the deep violet "Uruguay-grade" amethyst deposits of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil — the world's leading source of high-saturation gem-quality material. Per modern Vedic remediation practice, Amethyst is the recognised upratna (sub-stone) substitute for Blue Sapphire (Neelam) and serves as the safe, universally-suitable Saturn (Shani) alternative. GTL-Jaipur certified as natural untreated amethyst (not synthetic or heat-treated to citrine). Cut as a faceted oval to maximise colour saturation and brilliance.

Universally suitable without the strict 3-day pillow test required for Neelam.
Frequently asked
Is Amethyst as effective as Blue Sapphire for Saturn remediation?
Per Brihat Parashara and modern Jyotisha consensus, Amethyst (Jamunia) delivers approximately 50 per cent of Neelam's Saturn (Shani) effect. The trade-off is volatility versus accessibility — Neelam can deliver 100 per cent remedy or 100 per cent malefic backlash within 72 hours, while Amethyst delivers consistent moderate benefit without contraindication risk. For most natives, especially those new to ratna shastra, undergoing first Shani sade-sati, or unable to invest in unheated Neelam, Amethyst is the prescribed safer first choice.
How do I distinguish natural Amethyst from synthetic or heat-altered material?
Natural amethyst shows characteristic colour zoning (irregular dark and light violet bands visible at 10x), tiger-stripe twinning under polariscope, and a refractive index of 1.544-1.553. Synthetic hydrothermal amethyst is too uniform in colour, lacks natural zoning, and is detected by FTIR spectroscopy. Heat-treated amethyst that has been over-fired becomes citrine (yellow) — not a concern for violet stones. We provide GTL Jaipur certification stating natural untreated status.
When should I avoid wearing Amethyst?
Amethyst has virtually no contraindications and is suitable for all rashis. However avoid if you have severe vata-induced cold extremities or low blood pressure (Saturn enhances vata), during the first trimester of pregnancy without astrologer review, or if you experience persistent low energy, melancholy or chronic fatigue within 21 days of wear. Discontinue 7 days before major surgery as Saturn can prolong recovery.
What is the upratna alternative if Amethyst itself is out of budget?
Amethyst is itself the most accessible upratna and rarely requires further substitution. However if budget is below ₹1,500, the alternatives are Iolite (Neeli) at 4-6 ct or Lapis Lazuli (Lajward) at 8-10 ct as further-down sub-stones for Saturn. Lapis at 10 ct delivers approximately 35 per cent of Neelam's effect at one-twentieth the cost. All must be lab-certified natural and set in silver. Lapis starter pieces from ₹650.
How does ratti weight differ from carat for amethyst prescription?
One ratti equals approximately 0.91 carat. Vedic astrologers prescribe Amethyst minimum weight as one-eighth of body weight in kg expressed in ratti — typically 6-12 ratti (5.5-11 ct) for adult wear since it is a softer-energy upratna and benefits from larger size. This 7.50 ct stone equals 8.68 ratti, suitable for body weights up to 70 kg. For stronger Saturn remedy or heavier individuals, we offer 9-12 ct pieces priced from ₹3,400. Amethyst is best worn in higher carat weights than primary navratna stones. ---
